Established in 1998 in accordance with the South African National Roads Agency Limited and National Roads Act 1998, SANRAL is an independent, statutory company registered in terms of the Companies Act. The South African government, represented by the Minister of Transport, is SANRAL’s sole shareholder and owner. SANRAL’s mandate is to develop, maintain and manage South Africa’s 14 286-kilometer national road network, 1 073 kilometers of which are tolled and operated by SANRAL (nine toll routes and 17 mainline toll plazas). SANRAL has concessioned a further 1 309 kilometers of the national road network to three separate private toll concession companies. These toll concessions are listed elsewhere on IBTTA’s website. SANRAL’s total assets comprise over R30 billion, excluding land.
